- Garrison School
-
- Garrison School was built near the fort in 1850 for the children of
local settlers. In 1878 the
building was moved two miles to the east to the road now known as Garrison
Road so that it would be more centrally located. The school served the
community continuously until 1960 when it was then moved again to the
Surgeons' Quarter's grounds. Today Garrison School is furnished as an old country school, complete with
an
authentically dressed teacher and children, and a collection of textbooks
from 1840 to 1960.
- Surgeons' Quarters
-
- The Surgeons' Quarters is furnished as a home of army occupation days
with authentic period pieces and many original Fort Winnebago artifacts. The
fort artifacts include
the hand carved wooden eagle that surmounted the fort
gate, the surgeon's operating table from the fort hospital, two desks built
by soldiers and a sideboard that belonged to the Captain Gideon Low family.
Other fascinating articles include medical books and equipment of the time,
plans and records of the fort and unique collections of textiles, pewter,
early American glass, kitchen tools, and a collection of children's toys
circa 1850 to early 1900.
